Performance In Christianity series
Possessed in the Synagogue- Performance of Jesus
Jesus came down from the suburbs of Galilee, and went to teach in the synagogue on the Sabbath, the people with unusual authority, he spoke with Godly confidence. The people were bewildered because Jesus didn't teach like a scribe (Mark 1:22), He spoke with the anointing of God! In the midst of the church was a demon-possessed man whose demons wanted to show out. The demons called Jesus out, making a show of their recognition of who He was (Mark 1:24-25). Jesus doesn't need theatrics, He simply demanded them to shut-up and leave. The people-watching was familiar with exorcism ceremonies, but Jesus demonstrated power without ceremony, He acted with the Power of God!
Luke 4:31-37, Luke follows Mark's narrative and focuses on the authority of Jesus with His authoritative teaching and the powerful handling of the man with the demons (Mark 1:25). The people were astounded by the Son of David, who is also the Son of God, who simply commanded the devils to stop and come out. The unclean spirits came out and "hurt him not." (Luke 4:35) It was the habit of demons when leaving a person to leave them hurt (Acts 19:13-16). Jesus silenced the demons to protect the integrity of the Gospel. He didn't need the Devil speaking on His behalf because it would have been tainted. God does not mix clean with dirty (James 3:11).
Mark 1:21-28
And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let [us] alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine [is] this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.
Holy Spirit, Ruach Hakkodesh (Psalm 51:11), we thank You for You know our thoughts even before we think them. We praise You because You heal us, and we recover with consciences that Glorify You. We decree and declare blessings upon those who walk in the compassion of Your salvation so that; by the Work of Your Faith, we carry the sick and they recover. Now, for the Kingdom and the Glory of God, we petition, with anointing in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, and Savior, Amen.
